Tunis Unmissables

Tunis blends Phoenician and Roman history with deep Islamic heritage. The Archaeological Site of Carthage and the Carthage National Museum showcase the remains of a once-mighty empire, including the massive Antoninus Therms, the largest Roman baths in Africa. In the heart of the city, the UNESCO-listed Medina features the 8th-century Al-Zaytuna Mosque and the historic Bab el Bhar gate. The Bardo National Museum houses one of the world's most significant collections of Roman mosaics, providing a detailed look at life in ancient North Africa.

Tunisia's Historic Treasures

This collection spans millennia of Mediterranean history, from the Phoenician roots of the Tophet de Salammbô to the Roman grandeur of the Antoninus Baths and Carthage Amphitheatre. In the heart of Tunis, the Medina reveals its Ottoman legacy through ornate 18th-century palaces like Dar El Haddad and the royal Tourbet el Bey mausoleum. Coastal defenses, including the 16th-century Fort La Goulette and the island fortress of Chikly, illustrate the strategic importance of this North African crossroads.

Tunis Religious Heritage

Tunis's religious landscape reflects centuries of diverse cultural influences. The Medina houses the 8th-century Al-Zaytuna Mosque, the city's oldest, alongside the Ottoman-style Sidi Mahrez Mosque. European architectural styles appear in the Neo-Byzantine Cathedral of St. Vincent de Paul and the decommissioned Saint Louis Cathedral on Byrsa Hill. From the 13th-century Hafsid Kasbah Mosque to modern landmarks in Carthage, these sites illustrate the architectural evolution and spiritual history of the Tunisian capital.

Local Markets and Supermarkets

Tunis offers a blend of historic trading hubs and modern retail chains. The Marché Central, dating back to 1891, stands as a landmark of French protectorate architecture, while the Souq des Chechias preserves 17th-century craft traditions in the heart of the Medina. Beyond specialized souks, municipal markets in La Marsa and Ariana provide fresh local produce and distilled floral waters. For convenience, widespread chains like Monoprix and Carrefour provide standardized household goods and imported products across the city's residential districts.
