Tunja Essentials

Tunja serves as a living museum of Colombia’s colonial and independence history. The city’s historic center preserves 16th-century architecture, including the oldest cathedral in the country and unique mansions like the Casa del Fundador. Notable for its Renaissance-style murals and Mudéjar influences, the area showcases the religious and administrative heritage of the Spanish era. Nearby, the Puente de Boyacá marks the definitive battlefield where Colombia secured its independence in 1819, housing monuments and an eternal flame dedicated to the liberating army.
