Zakynthos Essentials

Zakynthos wordt gekenmerkt door dramatische kalkstenen kliffen en het azuurblauwe water van Navagio Beach, waar het scheepswrak Panagiotis uit 1980 ligt. De zuidelijke kusten van het eiland, met name binnen het Nationaal Marine Park, dienen als vitale broedplaatsen voor de bedreigde Caretta caretta-zeeschildpadden. Buiten de kust beschikt de hoofdstad over de in renaissancestijl gebouwde Sint-Niklaaskerk op de pier en het museum dat is gewijd aan de nationale dichter Dionysios Solomos. Voor een panoramisch uitzicht kijkt het op een heuvel gelegen dorp Bohali uit over de haven en de overblijfselen van een Venetiaans kasteel.

Best Beaches in Zakynthos

Zakynthos features a diverse coastline ranging from the dramatic limestone cliffs of Navagio Beach, home to the 1980 Panagiotis shipwreck, to the sulfur-rich waters of Xigia. The southern Vasilikos Peninsula and Laganas Bay serve as vital nesting grounds for the endangered Caretta caretta sea turtles, particularly at Gerakas and Dafni beaches. While the eastern shore features long, sandy stretches like Banana and Alykes with shallow waters, the western coast is characterized by rugged fjords and rocky inlets like Porto Roxa.

Historical Landmarks
