Arraial do Cabo Essentials

Prainhas do Atalaia

Two small beaches joined at low tide, famous for the 255-step wooden staircase that descends the cliffside. The waters here are notably calm and clear, facing the Ilha do Cabo Frio across the channel.

Pontal do Atalaia

A high rocky headland that serves as the primary sunset viewpoint in the region. It provides the overland access route to the Prainhas staircase and offers panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Praia Grande

An expansive beach stretching over 40 kilometers toward Saquarema. Known for its cold waters and consistent swell, it is a primary spot for surfing and features a wide boardwalk with several seafood kiosks.

Prainha

The first beach encountered upon entering the city, characterized by calm, shallow water and a backdrop of forested hills. A short trail on the right side leads to the smaller Praia da Graçainha.

Gruta Azul

A 15-meter-high sea cave on the western side of Ilha do Cabo Frio. The interior displays a bright turquoise hue when sunlight hits the water at specific angles. It is accessible only by boat.

Gruta do Amor

A small cave tucked into the rocks at the right end of Prainhas do Atalaia. It is accessible by foot during low tide and is a frequent stop for photographs due to its unique framing of the sea.

Fenda de Nossa Senhora

A massive vertical crack in the cliffs of Ilha do Cabo Frio, roughly 40 meters high. It houses a small statue of Our Lady of Aparecida, placed there by local fishermen in 1721.

Praia dos Anjos

The city's central harbor where most boat tours depart. Historically, it is the site where Amerigo Vespucci landed in 1503. The beach is home to the local fishing colony and the Church of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios.
