Basel's Historic Landmarks

Basel’s history is preserved through its architectural landmarks spanning the medieval and Renaissance periods. The red sandstone Münster and the ornate, 500-year-old City Hall on Marktplatz serve as central anchors. The city's former defensive system is represented by the Spalentor and St. Alban Gate, two surviving 14th-century gateways. Spanning the Rhine, the Mittlere Brücke marks one of the oldest bridge sites on the river, while the St. Jakob monument commemorates a significant 15th-century battle.
