Extremadura Unmissables
Extremadura preserves some of Spain’s most significant historical landmarks, centered on the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Mérida, Cáceres, and Guadalupe. Mérida retains an extensive Roman legacy, including a 1st-century BC theater, amphitheater, and the Miraculous Aqueduct. The region’s medieval history is reflected in the Moorish Alcazabas of Badajoz and Mérida, the Gothic Castle of Zafra, and the Royal Monastery of Saint Mary of Guadalupe. Trujillo’s Renaissance architecture highlights the era of the Conquistadors, while the Museo Vostell Malpartida offers contemporary Fluxus art within an 18th-century industrial site.
Plaza Mayor
A Renaissance-era square dominated by a bronze equestrian statue of conquistador Francisco Pizarro. The plaza is bordered by historic stone palaces, including the 16th-century Palacio de la Conquista, and the San Martín de Tours church.
Museo Vostell Malpartida
Founded in 1976 by artist Wolf Vostell, this contemporary art museum is housed in an 18th-century wool-washing station. It features Fluxus movement works and the 'Auto-da-fé' collection, integrated into the dramatic granite landscape of Los Barruecos.
