Icelandic Lakes and Ponds

This collection features six notable lakes and ponds within Iceland's Fjallabak Nature Reserve, primarily concentrated around the Landmannalaugar area. These highland water bodies include volcanic explosion craters like Ljótipollur, formed in 1477, and lakes bordered by expansive lava fields such as Frostastaðavatn. The region is a significant destination for angling, with several lakes serving as habitats for Arctic char and brown trout, while the surrounding rhyolite mountains and volcanic sands provide diverse terrain for hiking.

A red-walled explosion crater lake formed during a volcanic eruption in 1477. Part of the Veiðivötn system, its deep turquoise waters are contained within high, iron-rich slopes.

Highland lake located in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve, situated north of the Landmannalaugar region.

Höfðavatn

Remote highland lake in the Fjallabak region, located along the Dómadalur route.

Löðmundarvatn

Freshwater lake at the base of Löðmundur mountain, utilized primarily for Arctic char fishing.

Dómadalsvatn

Shallow lake in the Dómadalur valley known for brown trout fishing and its surrounding volcanic landscape.

Frostastaðavatn

Large highland lake bordered by the Frostastaðahraun lava field. It is characterized by its blue-green water and is a common site for Arctic char fishing.
