Historic Churches and Mosques

This collection highlights the diverse religious history of Cairo, focusing on the historic district of Old Cairo. It includes the Hanging Church, suspended over the Roman Babylon Fortress, and the Mosque of Amr ibn al-As, the first Islamic place of worship in Africa. The Saints Sergius and Bacchus Church marks the traditional resting place of the Holy Family, while the Ben Ezra Synagogue stands on the site where baby Moses was reportedly found. Together, these landmarks represent the enduring coexistence of Coptic Christian, Islamic, and Jewish traditions.
