Historic Monuments

Nicosia’s historical landscape is defined by its 16th-century Venetian walls, which encircle the old city with eleven heart-shaped bastions. Within these fortifications, the 1570s Ottoman-era Hamam Omerye remains a functional site of bath culture. The city also hosts solemn memorials, including the Imprisoned Graves—a cemetery for EOKA fighters within the Central Jail—and the Venetian Column, a granite monolith transported from the ancient city of Salamis to signify Venetian rule.

Armenian genocide Monument

Located near the Armenian prelature, this memorial commemorates the victims of the 1915 Armenian Genocide. It serves as a focal point for the local Armenian community and features a commemorative monument designed to honor those who perished.

The Imprisoned Graves

A small cemetery located within the Central Jail of Nicosia. It contains the graves of 13 EOKA fighters who died during the 1955-1959 independence struggle, including nine who were executed by hanging by the British colonial administration.

Liberty Monument

A piece of Cypriot history. It was built to commemorate EOKA fighters getting out of prison - but nowadays, the locals are embarassed by it.

Venetian Column

This granite monolith in Atatürk Square was brought from the ancient city of Salamis and erected by the Venetians in 1550. The base is decorated with the coats of arms of prominent Venetian families who lived in Cyprus.
