Historic Castles & Monuments

Lorestan Province features a diverse collection of architectural landmarks ranging from Sassanid-era defensive structures to medieval mausoleums. The centerpiece is the Khorramabad-based Falak-ol-Aflak Castle, a massive fortress with twelve towers. The list also includes the 12th-century tomb of Shuja-ud-din Khurshid, the founder of the Atabeg dynasty, and the Khwarazmian-era mausoleum of Baba Tahir. These sites highlight the region’s strategic importance and the evolution of Persian funerary architecture from the 12th through the 19th centuries.
