Historic Churches & Stave Churches

The Sognefjord region contains some of Norway's most significant religious architecture, spanning from the 12th-century Romanesque stone masonry of Hove Church to the intricate timber craftsmanship of the Hopperstad and Kaupanger stave churches. This collection includes the 19th-century octagonal wooden design of Tjugum and the English-inspired St. Olaf’s Church. Tjugum kyrkje

Octagonal wooden parish church completed in 1863. Designed by architect Christian Heinrich Grosch, it stands on a historic site used for worship since the Middle Ages.

St. Olaf's Church, Balestrand

St. Olaf's Church is an Anglican church in the village of Balestrand in Sogndal Municipality in the county of Vestland in Norway.

Kaupanger stavkyrkje

Built around 1140, this is the largest stave church in the Sogn region. It features 22 staves and has remained in continuous use as a parish church for over 800 years.

Hove kyrkje

A Romanesque stone church dating back to approximately 1170. It is one of the oldest stone structures in Norway and originally served as a private chapel for a local chieftain.

Tønjum kyrkje

A wooden parish church built in 1832 in the Empire style. It replaced a medieval stave church that was destroyed by a powerful windstorm in 1823.
