Historic Sites
Split's historic center is anchored by the 4th-century Diocletian's Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site that retains much of its original Roman layout. This selection includes the monumental Golden, Silver, and Bronze gates that served as the palace's primary defensive entrances. Beyond the walls, the 9-kilometer Roman aqueduct showcases ancient engineering, while Ivan Meštrović's sculptures of Gregory of Nin and Marko Marulić represent the city’s transition from Roman rule to its medieval and Renaissance identity.
Diocletian's Palace
Ancient Roman palace built for Emperor Diocletian, featuring ruins, fortifications, and architectural elements from Roman, Renaissance, and Baroque periods. It is a UNESCO World Heritage archaeological site and a notable filming location.
Golden Gate
The northern entrance to Diocletian's Palace, originally used only by the Emperor. Built in the 4th century, it features a double gate system designed for defense and remains the most elaborately decorated of the palace gates.
Brass Gate of Diocletian's Palace
The Bronze Gate, or "the Southern Gate", is the smaller of the four principal Roman gates into the stari grad of Split.
Gregory of Nin
A massive bronze statue by Ivan Meštrović depicting the 10th-century bishop who advocated for the use of the Slavic language in liturgy. The statue's polished big toe is a result of a popular local tradition of rubbing it for luck.
Silver Gate
The eastern entrance to the palace, which historically connected the main street to the town market. It was reconstructed in the 1950s after being cleared of later medieval additions to reveal its original Roman structure.
Marko Marulić
A bronze statue by Ivan Meštrović located in Fruit Square. It commemorates the 15th-century Split-born poet and humanist known as the father of the Croatian Renaissance.
Rimski akvadukt
Constructed around 300 AD, this 9-kilometer-long stone structure transported water from the Jadro River to Diocletian’s Palace. It remains the most impressive and best-preserved Roman aqueduct in Croatia.
