Wilderness Huts & Shelters
Southland’s backcountry features a network of Department of Conservation (DOC) huts and private lodges essential for navigating Fiordland, Stewart Island, and the Takitimu Mountains. These shelters range from large serviced huts on Great Walks like the Kepler Track to remote 2-bunk bivouacs on the Dusky and George Sound Tracks. Most provide basic amenities such as bunk beds, water tanks, and wood stoves, serving as critical refuges for hikers facing the region's unpredictable alpine weather.
Brod Bay Shelter
Basic day shelter and campsite located on the shores of Lake Te Anau along the Kepler Track.
Luxmore Hut
A 54-bunk serviced hut on the Kepler Track at 1,085 meters. It features a wood heater and solar lighting, located near the Luxmore Caves.
Homer Hut
A New Zealand Alpine Club lodge located near the Homer Tunnel, serving as a primary base for climbers in the Darran Mountains.
Kiwi Burn Hut
