The Silver Gate, historically known as Porta orientalis, is the eastern entrance to the Diocletian's Palace. Constructed from limestone, it is one of the four main Roman gates that provided access to the ancient complex. The structure originally included two octagonal defensive towers, the remains of which are still visible today.
Over the centuries, the gate underwent various architectural modifications, including the addition of a church built directly above the entrance. It is situated in close proximity to the city's main market. The gate was subject to a significant restoration project in 1952 to preserve its Roman heritage.
As a primary entry point into the historic old town, the gate is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site designation for the palace. It remains an active thoroughfare for those entering the city's ancient core.
