Altai Republic Essentials

The Altai Republic is defined by the Chuysky Trakt, a historic trade route traversing the Altai Mountains toward the Mongolian border. This selection features the 4,506-meter Belukha Mountain, the UNESCO-listed Katun Nature Reserve, and the archaeological site of Denisova Cave. Key locations include the Martian-like red landscapes of Kyzyl-Chin, the turquoise Geyser Lake, and the dramatic confluence of the Chuya and Katun rivers, alongside the high-altitude Ukok Plateau and several significant waterfalls.

A

Cujskij trakt

A historic federal highway connecting Novosibirsk to the Mongolian border. It follows ancient Silk Road trade routes and was paved in the 1930s, passing through the Seminsky and Chike-Taman mountain passes.

Panoramic viewpoint overlooking the Chulyshman River valley and its steep canyon walls. It offers a vantage point for the Katu-Yaryk pass and the numerous waterfalls cascading into the valley below.

Mars-1

Located in the Kyzyl-Chin valley, these hills feature distinct red, orange, and yellow layers caused by high concentrations of iron oxide and manganese. The unique geological formations resemble a Martian landscape.

Chike-Taman pass

A mountain pass on the Chuysky Trakt reaching an elevation of 1,295 meters. It features a winding serpentine road with a 4-kilometer ascent and descent, offering views of the central Altai range.

Gejzernoe ozero

A small thermal lake near Aktash known for its bright turquoise color. Concentric circles form on the sandy bottom due to thermal springs that periodically shift the silt, creating evolving patterns.

Slianie Cui i Katuni

Korbu waterfall

A 12.8-meter waterfall located on the eastern shore of Lake Teletskoye within the Altai Nature Reserve. It is accessible primarily by boat and features a wooden viewing platform.

Also known as the Bolshoy Chulchinsky Waterfall, this is a massive 160-meter cascade on the Chulcha River. It is a relatively young waterfall formed by a massive rockfall roughly 150 years ago.

A high-altitude plateau located at the junction of Russia, Kazakhstan, China, and Mongolia. Part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, it is famous for Pazyryk burial mounds and rare snow leopard habitats.

A two-tier waterfall on the Kamyshla River with a total drop of 12 meters. It is located near the village of Barangol and is accessible via forest trail or motorboat.
