Ankara Essentials

Ankara serves as a window into Turkey’s evolution, from the ancient Phrygian capital of Gordium to the monumental Anıtkabir, the final resting place of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. The Museum of Anatolian Civilizations showcases artifacts from the Paleolithic to the Hittite eras, while the hilltop Citadel and the 1st-century Temple of Augustus highlight Roman and Byzantine layers. Modern landmarks like the neoclassical Kocatepe Mosque and the 125-meter Atakule Tower provide a contrast to the archaeological remains of the Roman Baths and the Ethnography Museum’s focus on Turkic heritage.
