Historic Forts and Ruins

This collection spans centuries of Bodø's defensive and cultural history, from Iron Age burial mounds to 19th-century fortifications and World War II coastal batteries. It features Nyholmen skandse, built during the Napoleonic Wars to protect grain supplies, alongside numerous German-built installations from the Atlantic Wall. These sites offer a direct look at the strategic military importance of the Saltstraumen area and the ancient maritime traditions of Northern Norway.

Nyholms fort

Built in 1810 to protect the harbor and grain warehouses from British warships during the Napoleonic Wars. The site features restored cannons and original stone masonry.

Straumøy kystfort

World War II coastal fort located near the Saltstraumen maelstrom. It was established by German forces to control the entrance to the Skjerstad Fjord.

Straumøy kystbatteri

An artillery position from the German occupation during World War II, designed to support the defense of the Saltstraumen current.

Reitan kystbatteri

Remnants of a World War II coastal battery that monitored the maritime approaches to Bodø.

Eidet kystfort

Ruins of a German coastal defense installation situated near the Kjerringøy peninsula.

Tårnvik kystfort

World War II coastal battery ruins located at the northern tip of the Kjerringøy area.

Alterring/vikinggrav

A circular stone formation dating to the Viking Age, likely used as a burial site or for ceremonial purposes.

Jernaldergraver

Prehistoric burial mounds dating back to the Iron Age, located in the coastal landscape.

Old car

The rusted remains of a vintage vehicle abandoned in the forest near local heritage trails.

Machine Gun Bunker #WW2

A concrete machine gun bunker preserved from the World War II German occupation.

Ned grova

Historical ruins located along the lower sections of the Grova hiking area.
