Cinque Terre Churches & Shrines
The religious landscape of Cinque Terre features a collection of Ligurian Gothic and Romanesque structures dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries. Each of the five coastal villages houses a central parish church, often distinguished by iconic black-and-white striped marble facades and intricate rose windows. Beyond the village centers, a network of ancient hillside sanctuaries serves as historical pilgrimage sites, connected by traditional hiking trails and offering insight into the region's medieval architectural evolution.
A Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista
Built between 1244 and 1307, this Ligurian Gothic church features a striking facade of alternating white marble and local dark stone. Notable elements include its white marble rose window and a 14th-century baptismal font.
B Chiesa di Santa Margherita di Antiochia
Constructed in 1318, this church is uniquely situated on a rock foundation overlooking the harbor. It features an octagonal bell tower and a three-aisle interior built with dark local stone.
C Chiesa di San Pietro
A 1334 Ligurian Gothic church built on the site of an 11th-century chapel. The facade features a Carrara marble rose window with intricate carvings of local flora and fauna.
D Chiesa di San Francesco
Part of a 17th-century Capuchin monastery, this church houses a 'Crucifixion' painting attributed to Anthony van Dyck. It sits on San Cristoforo hill, dividing the old and new parts of Monterosso.
E Chiesa di San Lorenzo
Dated to 1338, this Ligurian Gothic church features a 14th-century rose window. Its separate bell tower was originally constructed as a defensive watchtower for the village of Manarola.
F Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista
Founded in 1340, this church retains its original 14th-century side portals and rose window, despite a 19th-century neo-Gothic facade reconstruction. The interior contains a 16th-century wooden crucifix.
G Chiesa di San Francesco
A 17th-century church and former convent of the Reformed Friars Minor. The complex now serves as a municipal space while retaining its original ecclesiastical architecture.
H Santuario di Nostra Signora della Salute
A 12th-century Romanesque sanctuary located in the village of Volastra. Built with local sandstone, it serves as the historical sanctuary for the community of Manarola.
I Santuario di Nostra Signora di Soviore
The oldest sanctuary in Liguria, first documented in 1225. Located at 477 meters above sea level, the complex includes a Romanesque church and a 14th-century guesthouse for pilgrims.
J Madonna del Ponte
Also known as the Sanctuary of Madonna del Buon Consiglio, this religious site is located in the Pignone area near an ancient bridge.
K Santuario di Nostra Signora di Reggio
An 11th-century Romanesque sanctuary situated on a panoramic ridge above Vernazza. It is surrounded by centuries-old trees and is accessible via a traditional stone-paved pilgrimage path.
Oratorio di Santa Croce
A 16th-century oratory located in the upper part of Vernazza, historically serving as the seat of the Confraternity of the Holy Cross.
