Historic Fortresses and Ruins

Eastern Macedonia and Thrace feature a diverse range of defensive and civic engineering works spanning from antiquity to the Ottoman era. This selection highlights the 16th-century Kamares aqueduct and the Byzantine-Ottoman fortress in Kavala, alongside the ancient maritime defenses of Thasos. These sites, including the 4th-century BC Tower of Thimonia and the multi-layered Acropolis of Thasos, demonstrate the region's strategic importance and architectural evolution across two millennia.

The Castle of Kavala

A 15th-century Ottoman fortress built on Byzantine foundations. The site features a central circular tower, a guardhouse, and an arsenal, offering panoramic views of the North Aegean.

Ancient Tower of Thimonia

A well-preserved circular watchtower on Thasos dating to the 4th or 5th century BC, constructed with large marble blocks for coastal defense.

Ebraiokastro

Coastal ruins of an Early Christian basilica built over an ancient sanctuary, featuring marble foundations and remnants of columns overlooking the sea.

Aqueduct

Also known as Kamares, this 16th-century Ottoman structure spans 280 meters with 60 arches, originally supplying water from Mount Pangaios to the city.

Acropolis of Thasos

Ancient site featuring the foundations of the Temple of Athena, the sanctuary of Pan, and a medieval fortress constructed by the Genoese Gattilusi family.
