Langanes Essentials
Langanes is a 40-kilometer-long peninsula in northeast Iceland characterized by steep sea cliffs and a history of remote settlement. This list features the Fontur lighthouse at the peninsula's tip, the abandoned early 20th-century fishing village of Skálar, and the 19th-century stone parsonage at Sauðanes. Visitors can explore the wreckage of a US Navy R4D-6 aircraft from 1969 and the remains of a Cold War-era NATO radar station on Heiðarfjall mountain.
Langanes
Langanes is a peninsula in northeast Iceland. The name literally means "long peninsula".
Langanes
Known as Fontur, this lighthouse stands at the extreme tip of the peninsula. The current concrete structure was built in 1950, replacing a steel tower from 1910.
Sauðaneshús Local Folk Museum
Housed in a former parsonage built in 1879, this is one of Iceland's oldest stone buildings. The museum exhibits artifacts reflecting the traditional rural and fishing history of the region.
Skalar
A deserted fishing village that flourished in the early 1900s and was abandoned by 1955. Visible ruins include the old pier and house foundations.
Járnkarlinn
A prominent iron-clad landmark and viewpoint on the northern coast, offering views over the surrounding sea cliffs and the Arctic Ocean.
R4D-6 wreckage
The fuselage of a US Navy Douglas R4D-6 aircraft that made an emergency landing on the Sauðanes farm in 1969.
Sauðaneskirkja
A traditional wooden church built in 1889, located next to the Sauðaneshús folk museum.
Heiðarfjall
A 266-meter mountain that served as the site for a NATO radar station during the Cold War from 1954 to 1970.
