Summer and early autumn are the most pleasant times for walking and hiking. Winters are cold and snowy, which suits skiers. Spring can be wet, and snow often stays on the hills until April.

The biggest annual event is the Jizerská 50, a famous cross-country ski race held in nearby Bedřichov each winter, usually in late January or February. Thousands of amateur skiers take part, so book a room early for that weekend.

Ještěd is the 1,012 m mountain above the city. On its summit stands a tower shaped like a hyperboloid, designed by Karel Hubáček and completed in 1973. It holds a hotel and restaurant, and on a clear day the view reaches into Germany and Poland. The cable car is closed for rebuilding, so reach the top by car or on marked hiking trails.

Liberec Town Hall dominates the main square, náměstí Dr. E. Beneše. This Neo-Renaissance building from 1888–1893 has guided tours of its interiors and main tower in the summer season.

North Bohemian Museum is the oldest museum of applied arts in the Czech Republic, founded in 1873. It has strong collections of glass, textiles and regional history, and you can climb its tower.

Liberec Regional Gallery is the regional art gallery. Since 2014 it has been housed in the restored former city baths, known as Lázně. The collection includes Dutch painting and 19th- and 20th-century Czech, German and Austrian art.

Liberec Zoo opened in 1904 and is the oldest zoo in the Czech Republic. It sits on a hill a short tram ride from the centre.

Liberec Botanical Garden is next to the zoo and is the oldest botanical garden in the country. Its greenhouses hold orchids, cacti and carnivorous plants, so it is a good choice on a rainy day.

iQLANDIA is a large hands-on science centre with a planetarium. It is one of the best options for families with children.

F. X. Šalda Theatre is a Neo-Renaissance theatre next to the town hall, designed by the Viennese firm of Fellner and Helmer. It stages opera, drama and ballet.

• Ski on the city's own mountain: In winter, the ski area on Ještěd starts at the edge of the city, so you can ski and be back in town for dinner.
• Cross-country skiing in the Jizera Mountains: The groomed trails around Bedřichov are among the best in the country. Watch or join the Jizerská 50 race weekend in winter.
• Dinner in the Ještěd tower: Eat in the restaurant at the top of the tower and watch the lights of the city below after sunset.
• Christmas market on the main square: In December, stalls and a Christmas tree fill the square in front of Liberec Town Hall.
• A night at the theatre: See an opera or ballet in the historic hall of F. X. Šalda Theatre. The evening programme changes often, so check what is on during your stay.

Liberec is a good base for short trips to towns, castles and mountains. These are listed from closest to farthest.

• Jablonec nad Nisou — about 30 min by tram line 11. This neighbouring town is known for glass and costume jewellery. The Museum of Glass and Jewellery is the main reason to go.
• Jizera Mountains — about 30–45 min by bus or car. Forests, peat bogs and viewpoints make it good for hiking in summer. In winter it has one of the best cross-country ski networks in the country, centred on Bedřichov.
• Frýdlant Castle — about 30 min by train to the town of Frýdlant. A castle and chateau on a rock above the town, with rich historic interiors.
• Sychrov Chateau — about 20 min by car or 30 min by train. A Neo-Gothic chateau with a large English-style park.
• Bohemian Paradise — about 45 min by train to Turnov. Sandstone rock towns, castle ruins and marked trails make this one of the most popular hiking areas in the Czech Republic.
• Görlitz — about 1 hour by car, or around 1.5–2 hours by train via Zittau. This German town on the Polish border has a very well-preserved historic centre.

• By air: The nearest major airport is Prague Václav Havel Airport, about 120 km away by road. The drive takes about 1.5 hours. By public transport, go into Prague and continue by bus.
• By bus: This is the fastest way from Prague. Buses leave about hourly from Černý Most (metro line B) and take about 1 hour 15 minutes, sometimes longer in traffic.
• By train: Trains from Prague take about 2.5–3 hours, usually with a change in Turnov. Regional trains also connect Liberec with Zittau in Germany. Check times on České dráhy.

• Public transport: Trams and buses cover the city and run to Jablonec nad Nisou. You can buy a single ticket on board by tapping a contactless bank card at the ticket machine. The Idolka app and ticket machines at stops are other options. Timetables are on DPMLJ.
• Taxi: Taxis and ride-hailing are available but rarely needed in the compact centre.
• On foot / cycling: The centre is easy to explore on foot, but it is hilly. Cycling is best for trips into the surrounding hills.

• Is a car worth it?: Not for the city itself, where trams and walking work well. A car is useful for reaching mountain trailheads, ski areas and small towns in the region.
• Parking: The centre has paid street parking zones and several car parks. You can usually pay at machines or by mobile app.
• Winter: Roads up to Ještěd and into the Jizera Mountains can be icy and busy on snowy weekends. Winter tyres are required in snowy conditions.

Food in Liberec is mostly classic Czech cooking: roast pork with dumplings, goulash, and fried cheese, with local beer. On cold days, look for garlic soup and potato pancakes.

The best area for eating out is the old centre around náměstí Dr. E. Beneše and the pedestrian streets nearby, where cafés and restaurants are close together. Many of these places serve a good-value set lunch on weekdays.

Liberec is a safe city for visitors, and violent crime against tourists is rare. Use normal care with bags in crowded trams and at the bus station.

The main risks are outdoors. Weather on Ještěd and in the Jizera Mountains can change quickly, so take warm layers even in summer. In winter, use marked trails and check snow conditions. Ticks are common in forests and meadows from spring to autumn, so check your skin after hiking.

Liberec was first mentioned in 1352 under its German name, Reichenberg. Its oldest surviving homes are the half-timbered Wallenstein Houses, built in 1678–1681 for local cloth makers. The Renaissance Liberec Chateau was built by the Redern family in the late 16th century.

In the 19th century, textile factories made the city one of the richest in Bohemia. It was often called the "Manchester of Bohemia". Factory owners such as the Liebieg family paid for villas and public buildings, and the city built Liberec Town Hall and F. X. Šalda Theatre to show its wealth.

Most people in Reichenberg spoke German. After the Munich Agreement, the city became the capital of the Nazi Reichsgau Sudetenland in 1939. After 1945, most of the German population was expelled. On 21 August 1968, Soviet-led troops invaded Czechoslovakia, and nine people died in Liberec. In the same years, the city gained its modern symbol: the tower on Ještěd.
