Passau Museums & Art

Passau's cultural landscape spans from antiquity to the modern era. The city hosts the world's largest collection of Bohemian glass, featuring over 30,000 items in the historic Wilder Mann building. On the hilltop, the 13th-century Veste Oberhaus fortress contains the Oberhausmuseum, detailing medieval life and regional history. In the Old Town, the Museum Moderner Kunst showcases contemporary works in a 14th-century townhouse, while the RömerMuseum Kastell Boiotro preserves the remains of a late Roman fort and artifacts from the Danube frontier.

Veste Oberhaus

Veste Oberhaus is a fortress that was founded in 1219 and, for most of its time, was the stronghold of the Bishop of Passau, Germany.

Passau Glass Museum

The world’s largest collection of Bohemian glass, featuring over 30,000 pieces dating from the 17th to the 20th century. Exhibits include works from the Baroque, Empire, Biedermeier, and Art Nouveau periods.

Museum Moderner Kunst

Established in 1990 by architect Hanns Egon Wörlen in a 14th-century building. The museum hosts changing exhibitions of 20th and 21st-century art, focusing on Expressionism and contemporary Central European works.

Oberhausmuseum

Housed within the Veste Oberhaus fortress, this museum documents the history of Passau and its prince-bishops. It features permanent exhibitions on medieval guilds, trade, and the city’s strategic military importance.

RömerMuseum Kastell Boiotro - Passau

Built on the foundations of a late Roman fort from the 3rd century. The site displays excavated walls, watchtowers, and artifacts documenting Roman military presence and daily life along the Danube.
