Xàtiva Essentials

Xàtiva, the birthplace of Popes Calixtus III and Alexander VI, is defined by its strategic twin fortress spanning the Sierra del Castell. The city's history is marked by its resistance during the War of the Spanish Succession, famously commemorated by the upside-down portrait of Philip V in the Almodí Museum. This selection covers Xàtiva's evolution from the Neanderthal remains of Cova Negra and Roman foundations to the monumental Renaissance architecture of the Basílica de Santa Maria and the 13th-century Sant Feliu church.

Religious Heritage

Xàtiva’s religious landscape is defined by the monumental Basílica de Santa María, a Renaissance and Baroque collegiate church built over a former mosque. The collection includes the 13th-century Sant Feliu, one of the oldest churches in the Valencian Community, and the Gothic-Mudéjar Sant Pere where Pope Alexander VI was baptized. These sites, along with hilltop hermitages like Santa Anna and Sant Josep, showcase a transition from Romanesque foundations to ornate Gothic and Baroque architecture across the city's historical center.
