Best Beaches

Antofagasta’s coastline features a diverse range of Pacific environments, from the calm, sheltered waters of Playa Juan Lopez near the Cerro Moreno peninsula to artificial swimming lagoons like Budeo. The southern sector offers rocky coves such as El Huascar and El Lenguado, which are favored for shore fishing and diving. Further south, the remote Caleta Botija showcases the rugged desert-meets-sea landscape and archaeological sites associated with the indigenous Chango people.

Playa Juan Lopez

Sheltered beach located 38 kilometers north of Antofagasta behind the Cerro Moreno peninsula. The bay provides calm waters suitable for swimming and recreational fishing, protected from the region's strong southwesterly winds.

Playa Amarilla

Sandy beach in the southern sector of the city characterized by its yellow-toned sand and moderate surf, frequently used by local swimmers and bodyboarders.

El Huascar

Coastal area south of Antofagasta featuring rocky outcrops and small sandy pockets. The clear waters and underwater topography make it a common site for local diving and shore fishing.

La Rinconada

Extensive beach located north of the Juan Lopez peninsula. Known for its wide shoreline and consistent wind conditions, it serves as a primary landing zone for paragliders launching from the nearby cliffs.

El Lenguado

Narrow beach located south of the Coloso fishing cove. It is primarily used for recreational shore fishing, specifically targeting flounder in the surf zone.

Budeo

Artificial beach and swimming lagoon in northern Antofagasta. It features a man-made breakwater that creates a calm, wave-free environment for swimming in an otherwise high-energy coastal area.

Caleta Botija

Remote cove situated approximately 100 kilometers south of Antofagasta. The area contains archaeological sites related to the Chango culture and is characterized by steep desert cliffs meeting the Pacific.
