Avignon: Must-See Landmarks

Avignon’s historic center is defined by its 14th-century role as the seat of the Papacy. This collection features the UNESCO-listed Palais des Papes and the Romanesque Cathédrale Notre-Dame-des-Doms. The medieval Pont Saint-Bénezet spans the Rhône, while intact 14th-century city walls enclose narrow streets like the Rue des Teinturiers. Key landmarks include the Gothic Basilique Saint-Pierre, the Baroque Chapelle des Pénitents Noirs, and the Halles d'Avignon market with its distinctive botanical facade.

Avignon Theatre and Arts

Avignon is a global hub for performing arts, anchored by the historic 19th-century Opéra Grand Avignon and the world-renowned Festival d'Avignon. This selection features diverse venues, from the established Théâtre des Carmes—a pioneer of the "Off" festival—to contemporary spaces like La Manufacture and the dance-focused CDC - les Hivernales. Many theaters, such as Théâtre Benoit XII and Théâtre du Chien qui fume, are housed within historic structures inside the city’s medieval walls, hosting year-round performances and experimental works.

Avignon's Historic Heritage

Avignon's historical landscape is defined by its 14th-century status as the seat of the Catholic papacy. This collection features the Palais des Papes, the largest Gothic palace in Europe, alongside the Romanesque Avignon Cathedral and the iconic 12th-century Pont Saint-Bénezet. The list also highlights the city's diverse religious and civic heritage, including the Gothic Basilica of St Pierre, a 19th-century synagogue, and medieval defensive towers. Together, these sites represent centuries of architectural evolution within this UNESCO World Heritage city.

Avignon's Sacred Sites

Avignon's religious landscape is defined by its history as the papal seat during the 14th century. This collection features the Romanesque Avignon Cathedral and the flamboyant Gothic architecture of Basilique Saint-Pierre. The list includes diverse sites such as the unique Romanesque chapel built directly onto the Pont d'Avignon, a 19th-century synagogue, and several 14th-century collegiate churches that showcase the city's transition from medieval to Renaissance styles.
