Drenthe Essentials

Drenthe is characterized by its ancient megalithic tombs, known as hunebedden, and its unique social history. This selection includes the UNESCO-listed Colonies of Benevolence at Veenhuizen and Frederiksoord, established in the 19th century to combat poverty. It features the somber WWII memorial site of Kamp Westerbork and the adjacent radio telescope array. Cultural highlights include the living museum villages of Orvelte and Ellert en Brammert, the historic Mensinge manor house, the modern Wildlands Adventure Zoo, and the internationally renowned TT Circuit Assen.

Veenhuizen

A former judicial reform colony and part of the UNESCO World Heritage "Colonies of Benevolence." Established in 1823 to house the poor, the village features over 100 national monuments, including former prisons and staff housing decorated with moralistic inscriptions on their facades.

Wildlands

Wildlands, also known as Wildlands Adventure Zoo Emmen, is a zoo in Emmen, the Netherlands. It opened in March 2016, replacing the Emmen Zoo.

Herinneringscentrum Kamp Westerbork

A memorial center and museum dedicated to the history of the transit camp used during World War II for the deportation of Jews, Sinti, and Roma. The site includes original barracks, the commander's house, and monuments commemorating the victims.
