Wilderness Huts and Shelters

This collection features remote bothies and mountain shelters across the Scottish Highlands, ranging from coastal lookouts to deep glen refuges. Most are maintained by the Mountain Bothies Association and offer basic accommodation without electricity or running water. Highlights include former schoolhouses, converted coastguard stations, and historical hermitages, providing essential shelter for hikers traversing the Fisherfield Forest, the Cuillin, and the Cape Wrath Trail.

Coruisk Memorial Hut

Located on the shore of Loch Coruisk in the Cuillin, this hut is accessible by boat from Elgol or via a rugged hike over the 'Bad Step' rock feature.

Kearvaig

A former cottage situated in a bay near Cape Wrath, offering a stone fireplace and white-walled rooms overlooking a secluded beach.

Shenavall Bothy

A classic stone bothy in the Fisherfield Forest, serving as a primary base for hikers climbing the remote 'Big Six' Munros.

The Lookout

A converted coastguard watchtower at Rubha Hunish, providing panoramic windows for whale watching and views across the Minch to the Outer Hebrides.

Maol Bhuide

A remote stone building in the Monar Forest, featuring a fireplace and offering shelter in one of the most isolated parts of the Highlands.

Easan Dorcha (The Teahouse)

A small wooden structure in the Coulin Forest, historically used as a shelter for stalkers and hikers, known locally as 'The Teahouse.'

Staoineag

A traditional stone bothy located near the banks of the River Spean, providing a stop for those exploring the hills around Loch Treig.

Lairig Leacach

A sturdy stone shelter situated on an ancient drove road in the Grey Corries, frequently used by mountaineers climbing Stob Coire Gaibhre.

Glendhu

A two-story stone cottage located at the head of a sea loch, accessible via a track from Kylestrome or by boat.

Strathchailleach

A remote hut once inhabited by a hermit for over 30 years. It features wall murals and sits on the rugged path toward Cape Wrath.

Knockdamph

A former shepherd's cottage on the track between Ullapool and Oykel Bridge, offering multiple rooms and a fireplace for large groups.

The Schoolhouse

This unique bothy at Duag Bridge was once a functioning schoolhouse. It retains its original character with old desks and a blackboard.

Carnmore Bothy

Situated by Fionn Loch, this simple stone shelter provides a remote base for exploring the crags of Carnmore and the nearby Munros.

Culra Bothy

A large mountain shelter located near Ben Alder. Note: This building has historically faced closure due to the presence of asbestos.

Strathchailleach Bothy

A remote stone cottage on the Cape Wrath Trail, known for its history as a hermit’s residence and its proximity to Sandwood Bay.

Albert Grant Bothy

A small, functional shelter in the Sutherland wilderness, providing basic protection for hikers in the Strath Naver area.

Glenbeg Bothy

A basic stone shelter located in the remote Glenbeg area, offering a dry refuge for those traversing the northern Highlands.

Lochstrathy bothy

A remote building in the Sutherland Flow Country, providing a simple stopping point in an expansive area of peatland and lochs.
