Grenoble Essentials

Grenoble, the Capital of the Alps, sits at the confluence of the Isère and Drac rivers. This selection features the 19th-century Bastille fortress, accessible via the distinctive spherical cable car cabins. Cultural highlights include the Musée de Grenoble’s extensive art collection and the Archaeological Museum's 6th-century crypt. Historical landmarks like the 15th-century Palace of the Parliament of Dauphiné and the 1924 Perret Tower—the first reinforced concrete tower in Europe—showcase the city's architectural evolution from its Gallo-Roman origins to modern innovation.

Grenoble Heritage

Grenoble’s heritage spans two millennia, from the 3rd-century Roman defensive walls to the innovative concrete architecture of the 20th century. The city’s history as the capital of the Dauphiné province is preserved in the 15th-century Palais du Parlement and the Gothic Église Saint-André. Medieval defensive structures like the Tour de l’Isle contrast with the 19th-century Bastille fortress overlooking the Isère. Modern landmarks include the Art Deco Garage Hélicoïdal and the 1925 Perret tower, the world's first reinforced concrete observation tower.

Grenoble Museums & Galleries

Grenoble's cultural landscape spans from ancient archaeology to contemporary art. The Museum of Grenoble houses a significant collection of Fine Arts and antiquities, while the Musée Dauphinois explores regional ethnography within a former convent. Specialized sites include the Archaeological Museum at Saint-Laurent and the Museum of Resistance and Deportation. For modern perspectives, Le Magasin occupies a historic industrial hall, and the Musée des troupes de montagne sits atop the Bastille fort, chronicling military history. Many of these institutions, including the Natural History Museum and the Museum of the Former Bishopric, offer free admission.
