Historic Sacred Sites

North Jeolla’s spiritual landscape is defined by centuries of diverse religious tradition. This collection spans from 6th-century Buddhist mountain retreats like Naesosa and Seonunsa, known for their ancient forests and woodcarvings, to the early 20th-century Romanesque architecture of Jeondong Catholic Church. It includes unique sites like Manghaesa, which overlooks the West Sea, and the headquarters of native Korean spiritual movements, offering a comprehensive look at the region's architectural and cultural heritage.

Naesosa

Established in 633 AD, this temple is famous for its 600-meter fir tree forest path and the intricate floral wood carvings on the doors of its main hall, Daeungjeon.

Jeondong Catholic Church

A Romanesque structure built between 1908 and 1914 on the site of the first Korean Catholic martyrdoms. It features distinctive grey and red brickwork and Byzantine-style domes.

Geumsansa

Located on Moaksan Mountain, this temple features the Mireukjeon, a unique three-story wooden hall that houses one of the largest indoor standing Buddha statues in Korea.

Seonunsa

Founded in 577 AD, this major temple is renowned for its 500-year-old camellia forest and the Seonunsa Temple Bronze Bell, a significant cultural property.

Chilbulsa

Situated on Jirisan Mountain, this temple is notable for the Ajabang, a traditional underfloor heating system designed in a cross shape that historically remained warm for 100 days.

Eunsusa

Located at the base of Maisan Mountain’s peaks, this temple is known for its natural spring and a rare pear tree designated as a natural monument.

Geumdangsa

A temple on Maisan Mountain featuring a 17th-century Gwaebultaeng scroll and a golden Buddha statue housed within its main hall.

Manghaesa

Positioned on a cliff overlooking the Saemangeum Seawall, this temple offers rare coastal views and is a known site for watching sunsets over the West Sea.
