Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park Highlights

Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park encompasses New Zealand's highest peak, reaching 3,724 metres, and the 27-kilometre-long Tasman Glacier. This alpine region features the Hooker Valley Track, which crosses three suspension bridges to reach proglacial lakes, and the steep ascent to Sealy Tarns and Mueller Hut for panoramic views of the Sealy Range. The Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre and the National Park Visitor Centre provide historical context on mountaineering achievements and the area's unique geological formation within the Southern Alps.

Glaciers of Aoraki / Mount Cook

Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park contains some of New Zealand's most significant ice formations, including the 27-kilometer-long Tasman Glacier, the country's longest. These glaciers, such as the Hooker and Mueller, originate high in the Southern Alps and feed into prominent proglacial lakes. The region's glacial landscape is characterized by deep crevasses, moraine-covered ice, and terminal lakes that have formed due to rapid retreat over the last century, providing a direct look at the area's geological transformation.

Wilderness Huts and Shelters

These high-altitude shelters provide essential base points for mountaineers and experienced hikers within Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. The collection includes historic structures like the 1917 Sefton Bivvy, the park's oldest hut, alongside modern facilities like the 2003 Mueller Hut. Situated on ridges and glacial plateaus, these huts offer access to the Tasman Glacier and the Caroline Face, serving as critical refuge from unpredictable alpine weather and starting points for technical climbs.
