Historic Religious Sites

Ayvalık’s religious landscape reflects its transition from a Greek Orthodox settlement to an Ottoman town. This collection features 19th-century neo-classical structures like the Faneromeni Church, famous for its sacred spring, and the Moonlight Monastery on Cunda Island. It also includes significant conversions, such as the Saatli and Çınarlı mosques, where bell towers and Christian architecture were adapted for Islamic worship. The Hamidiye Mosque stands out as the only historic mosque in the district originally built as such.

A

Saatli Camii

Originally built as the Agios Ioannis Church in the late 19th century, this structure was converted into a mosque in 1928. It is characterized by its prominent clock tower, which previously served as the church bell tower.

Çınarlı Mosque

A former neo-classical Greek church that has been transformed to Mosque. Probably the most elaborately decorated mosque in the city.

Ayışığı Manastırı

An 18th-century Greek Orthodox monastery situated on the northern coast of Cunda Island. The restored complex includes a small chapel and stone monastic quarters set within a steep hillside overlooking the sea.

Faneromeni Church

Constructed in 1890, this neo-classical stone church is built over a natural spring considered holy, known as an 'Ayazma.' The site features distinct masonry and was a significant center for the local Greek community.

Hamidiye Cami

Built in 1885 during the reign of Sultan Abdulhamid II, this is the only mosque in Ayvalık's historic center that was originally constructed as an Islamic place of worship rather than being converted from a church.
