Historic Religious Sites

This collection highlights the architectural and colonial history of Baja California Sur through its 17th and 18th-century Jesuit and Franciscan missions. From the foundational Misión de Loreto to the well-preserved stone masonry of San Francisco Javier, these sites showcase Spanish Baroque influences and regional construction techniques. Mision de San Ignacio

Founded in 1728, this mission features thick volcanic stone walls and Moorish-influenced architecture. Located in a central desert oasis, it remains one of the most intact Jesuit structures on the peninsula.

Misión San Luis Gonzaga Chiriyaqui

A mid-18th-century stone church that replaced an earlier 1740 structure. It stands as a well-preserved example of the austere colonial architecture used during the Jesuit expansion into the Baja California interior.

Misión San Francisco Javier de Viggé-Biaundó

Completed in 1758, this massive volcanic stone structure is widely considered the best-preserved mission in the region. It retains its original Baroque facade, gilded altarpieces, and historical mission bells.

Parroquia de la Purísima Concepción

Established in 1720, this site marks one of the early Jesuit settlements in the region. The parish continues to serve as the religious and community hub for the surrounding agricultural valley of La Purísima.

Founded in 1697, this is the first permanent Spanish mission in the Californias, known as the 'Mother of all Missions.' The current stone structure dates to 1740 and includes a museum detailing colonial history.
