Epirus Essentials

Epirus is defined by the dramatic Pindus Mountains, home to the deep Vikos Gorge and the mythological Acheron River. This region preserves significant historical sites, including the ancient oracle of Dodona and the Roman capital of Nicopolis. Architectural landmarks include the arched stone bridges of Arta and Konitsa, the cliffside Kipina Monastery, and the Byzantine Castle of Ioannina. Along the coast, the Venetian castle of Parga offers views over the Ionian Sea, while the Zalongo monument commemorates the area's revolutionary history.

Historic Fortifications

Epirus preserves a diverse array of fortifications reflecting its Byzantine and Ottoman history. The Castle of Ioannina features two distinct citadels—Its Kale and Aslan Pasha—overlooking Lake Pamvotis. Along the coast, the Venetian Castle of Parga and Ali Pasha’s stronghold at Anthoussa highlight strategic maritime defenses. Inland, the high-altitude Castle of Kiafa in Souli and the late Ottoman Fort of Laskara near Preveza represent the region's long-standing military significance and architectural evolution.

Historic Stone Bridges

These historic stone bridges represent the peak of traditional craftsmanship in Epirus, particularly within the Zagori region. Built between the 18th and 19th centuries, these arched structures were essential for connecting mountain villages across deep ravines and rivers like the Arachthos and Voidomatis. Constructed using local limestone without mortar, they feature distinct architectural styles ranging from single-span arches to rare triple-arched designs. Many are situated along ancient cobblestone paths once used by merchants and livestock.
