Garachico's Essential Wonders

Garachico's landscape was permanently altered by the 1706 Trevejo volcanic eruption, which filled its deep-water harbor with lava. This selection explores the town's resilient heritage, featuring the 16th-century Castillo de San Miguel and the natural pools of El Caletón formed by cooling basalt. The list includes architectural landmarks like the Church of Santa Ana and the Puerta de Tierra, a stone archway that once marked the entrance to one of Tenerife's most important commercial ports.

Castillo de San Miguel

A 16th-century square stone fortress built to defend the port against pirate attacks. It is one of the few structures that survived the 1706 volcanic eruption and now houses a heritage information center.

El Caletón

A series of natural swimming pools and channels created by the 1706 lava flow meeting the Atlantic Ocean. These basalt formations provide protected bathing areas directly adjacent to the historic castle.

Parque de la Puerta de Tierra

Features the original 16th-century stone archway that served as the entrance to the old port. The park also contains a traditional wooden wine press and gardens showcasing endemic plant species.

Charco El Cumplido

A natural volcanic tide pool located along the rocky coastline, offering a secluded spot for swimming in clear Atlantic waters.

Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles

Originally built in 1524 as part of a Franciscan convent, this church was reconstructed after the 1706 eruption. It features a whitewashed facade and traditional Mudejar-style coffered ceilings.

The Church of Santa Ana is the main church in Garachico, Tenerife. It is located next to the Plaza de la Libertad.

Convento de la Inmaculada Concepción

A cloistered convent founded in 1643. After being destroyed by the volcanic eruption and a subsequent fire, it was rebuilt in 1749, retaining its distinctive red-tiled roof and historic belfry.
