Tavira's historical center is defined by its medieval castle and the Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo, a National Monument built on a former mosque site. The Gilão River is crossed by the Ponte Antiga, a seven-arched bridge reconstructed in the 17th century. Religious landmarks include the Renaissance Igreja da Misericórdia and the 13th-century Igreja de Santiago.
