Ancient Ruins & Necropoli

Dakhla Oasis contains a dense concentration of archaeological sites spanning from the Old Kingdom to the Roman Period. This collection features the 6th Dynasty mastaba tombs at Qila' el-Dabba and the administrative center of Ain Asil. It includes the well-preserved Roman village of Kellis, the sandstone temple of Deir el-Hagar dedicated to the Theban Triad, and the vibrant rock-cut tombs of Gebel el-Muzawaka, which showcase a unique fusion of traditional Egyptian and Greco-Roman artistic styles.

A

Kellis

A Roman-era village, also known as Ismant el-Kharab, featuring mud-brick houses, churches, and temples dedicated to the god Tutu. The site is notable for the discovery of well-preserved papyri and wooden books providing insights into 4th-century daily life.

Amḥeida

Known in antiquity as Trimithis, this Roman city features a restored villa with elaborate wall paintings, a school, and a bathhouse. Excavations have revealed significant details about the administration and domestic life of the Roman-period oasis.

Deir el-Hagar

A sandstone temple built during the 1st century AD under Roman emperors Nero, Vespasian, and Domitian. Dedicated to the Theban Triad, the site features well-preserved reliefs and a surrounding mud-brick enclosure.

Qila' el-Dabba

An Old Kingdom necropolis containing the mastaba tombs of the 6th Dynasty governors of Dakhla. The site includes the tomb of Khentika, featuring internal chambers and mud-brick superstructures.

Gebel el-Muzawaka

A Roman-era hillside necropolis containing over 300 rock-cut tombs. The most significant are the tombs of Petosiris and Petubastis, which feature exceptionally preserved colorful frescoes blending Egyptian iconography with Greco-Roman stylistic influences.

Ain Asil

The administrative capital of the Dakhla Oasis during the Old Kingdom. This 6th Dynasty settlement features the remains of a fortified governor's palace, administrative buildings, and workshops constructed primarily of mud brick.

Ain Birbiya

A Roman-period temple dedicated to the deity Amun-Nakht. The site is notable for its massive sandstone gateway and surviving relief carvings, though much of the primary temple structure remains partially buried.

A Roman-era archaeological site located near Kellis, consisting of mud-brick remains from a small settlement or agricultural outpost.
