Historic Churches & Convents

Angra do Heroísmo, a UNESCO World Heritage site, preserves a dense concentration of religious landmarks reflecting its role as a key Atlantic port. This selection includes the 16th-century Convento de São Francisco, now home to the city museum, and the Jesuit-built Church of Nossa Senhora do Carmo with its intricate gilded woodcarvings. These sites showcase Azorean Baroque and Neoclassical styles, featuring traditional blue-and-white tiles and ornate altarpieces that illustrate the spiritual and artistic history of Terceira Island.

Convento São Francisco

A 16th-century convent housing the Museum of Angra do Heroísmo. Its large church features a high altar with gilded woodcarvings and a spacious cloister reflecting Renaissance and Mannerist architectural styles.

Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo (Igreja do Colégio dos Jesuítas)

A 17th-century Jesuit church known for its Mannerist facade and extensive Baroque interior. It contains significant collections of 18th-century Portuguese tiles and elaborate gilded woodcarvings.

Convento de S. Gonçalo

Founded in 1542, this is the oldest convent in Angra do Heroísmo. The interior preserves a notable collection of 17th and 18th-century religious art, including a double-grille choir and Baroque altars.

Igreja de Santa Luzia

A neoclassical church rebuilt after the 1980 earthquake. It serves as a central parish landmark, featuring a distinct bell tower and a refined interior typical of late 18th-century Azorean religious architecture.

Ermida do Desterro

A small, historic chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Exile. Its simple architecture represents the traditional hermitage style found throughout the Azores.
