Glaciers of Aoraki / Mount Cook

Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park contains some of New Zealand's most significant ice formations, including the 27-kilometer-long Tasman Glacier, the country's longest. These glaciers, such as the Hooker and Mueller, originate high in the Southern Alps and feed into prominent proglacial lakes. The region's glacial landscape is characterized by deep crevasses, moraine-covered ice, and terminal lakes that have formed due to rapid retreat over the last century, providing a direct look at the area's geological transformation.

Haast Glacier

A tributary glacier on the eastern slopes of the Southern Alps that flows into the upper reaches of the Tasman Glacier. It was named after the 19th-century explorer and geologist Julius von Haast.

Ball Glacier

A tributary glacier of the Tasman Glacier located on the eastern side of the Mount Cook Range. The glacier is a landmark for climbers on the Ball Pass crossing and sits near the historic site of the original Ball Hut.
