Avala Essentials
Rising 511 meters above sea level, Mount Avala is a protected landscape southeast of Belgrade. It features the 204-meter Avala Tower, the tallest structure in the Balkans, and the black marble Monument to the Unknown Hero, designed by Ivan Meštrović on the site of the former medieval Žrnov fortress. The area also hosts the 1964 Soviet War Veterans memorial, historic 1920s architecture like Mitrovicev Dom, and a traditional wooden church dedicated to Saint Stefan Lazarević.
