Historic & Archaeological Sites

This collection explores the layers of history in the Blagoevgrad region, from ancient Thracian rock sanctuaries and Roman settlements like Skaptopara to significant medieval strongholds. It features the 11th-century Samuil’s Fortress, the 13th-century seat of Despot Alexius Slav in Melnik, and 20th-century military history at Fort Istibey. These sites trace the strategic importance of the Struma and Mesta river valleys through various eras of fortification and urban development.

Samuil's Fortress

Medieval fortification situated between the Belasica and Ograzden mountains. It is the site of the 1014 Battle of Kleidion, where the Byzantine Emperor Basil II defeated the forces of Tsar Samuil.

Kazarma

Remains of a fortification and former barracks located on a hill overlooking Blagoevgrad.

Krepost Gradise

Remains of a Late Antiquity and medieval fortress located near the village of Gabrovo.

Ochyro Istimpee

A World War II fortification belonging to the Metaxas Line, located on the border ridge. It contains a complex network of underground tunnels and bunkers used for defense.

Despot Slav's fortress

Thirteenth-century medieval stronghold and residence of Despot Alexius Slav, located on a high plateau near Melnik.

Rimsko selise "Skaptopara"

Remains of a Roman settlement featuring a large bath complex and villa, unearthed during archaeological excavations near Blagoevgrad.

Rimska bana - Termi

Preserved Roman thermal baths utilizing local mineral waters, located in the vicinity of Garmen.

Momina Kula

Ruins of a medieval fortress strategically positioned in the Momina Klisura gorge of the Mesta River.

Skalno svetilise "Kamenot"/"Kamako"

Ancient Thracian rock sanctuary featuring ritual niches and altars carved into the stone, located near Yakoruda.

Sitan Kale

Ruins of a Late Antiquity and medieval fortress situated above Bansko, used for defense and observation of the valley.
