This collection explores the layers of history in the Blagoevgrad region, from ancient Thracian rock sanctuaries and Roman settlements like Skaptopara to significant medieval strongholds. Samuil's Fortress

Medieval fortification situated between the Belasica and Ograzden mountains. It is the site of the 1014 Battle of Kleidion, where the Byzantine Emperor Basil II defeated the forces of Tsar Samuil.
