Historic Forts and Heritage Sites

This selection traces the evolution of Cascais from a prehistoric settlement to a strategic maritime defense point. It includes the Grutas do Poço Velho, a Neolithic necropolis, alongside significant military structures like the 15th-century Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora da Luz and sections of the Forte Novo walls. Architectural highlights include the neo-Gothic Palácio Palmela and the 19th-century Marégrafo, a pioneering tide gauge used to establish Portugal's national sea level datum.

Forte Novo (troço de muralha)

A preserved section of the coastal defense walls that once protected the Cascais shoreline from maritime incursions.

Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora da Luz

A 15th-century fortification integrated into the Citadel of Cascais. Strategically positioned at the mouth of the Tagus, it served as a primary defense for the bay and the approach to Lisbon.

Palácio Palmela

A 19th-century neo-Gothic palace built as a summer residence for the Dukes of Palmela. The structure features distinctive turrets and sits prominently on the coastline.

Grutas do Poço Velho

A limestone cave system used as a prehistoric necropolis during the Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods. Excavations have uncovered human remains and artifacts dating back thousands of years.

Marégrafo de Cascais

An 1882 analog tide gauge, the first of its kind in Portugal. It remains operational and was historically used to determine the country's mean sea level and altimetric datum.
