Historic Forts and Museums

This collection highlights the defensive history and cultural heritage of the Edam-Volendam region. It features several fortifications belonging to the Stelling van Amsterdam, a UNESCO World Heritage defense line, including the well-preserved Fort bij Edam. The list also includes museums dedicated to local history, such as the Edam Museum in the town's oldest brick house and the schoolhouse in Etersheim where the classic Dutch children's character Dik Trom was created.

Volendam Museum

This museum showcases the history and culture of the fishing village, featuring traditional Volendam costumes, historical interiors, and local art. It is a partner of the I Amsterdam City Card.

Fort bij Edam

A component of the Stelling van Amsterdam defense line, this grassy fortification was built to protect the northern approach to Edam and the regional sluices.

The Edam Museum

Located in the town's oldest brick house, this museum is dedicated to the history of Edam.

Fort benoorden Purmerend

A defensive fortification belonging to the Stelling van Amsterdam, located north of Purmerend to monitor the region's dikes and access routes.

Fort bij Kwadijk

Part of the Stelling van Amsterdam, this site is unique as the fort was never fully completed, leaving behind specific earthworks and a single storage building.

Het schooltje van Dik Trom

A museum housed in the 19th-century schoolhouse where author C. Joh. Kieviet taught and wrote the first stories of the famous Dutch children's character, Dik Trom.
