Historic Churches & Chapels

Jujuy’s ecclesiastical architecture showcases the fusion of Spanish colonial design and indigenous craftsmanship, known as Andean-Baroque. These historic structures, dating primarily from the 17th and 18th centuries, are constructed with thick adobe walls, cactus wood (cardón) ceilings, and mud-tiled roofs. Key highlights include the Cuzco School paintings in Uquía and the 16th-century foundation of Susques, reflecting the deep religious heritage of the Quebrada de Humahuaca and the Puna highlands.

IGLESIA SANTA ROSA - PURMAMARCA

Dating from 1648, this National Historic Monument features thick adobe walls and a roof made of cardón (cactus) wood. It houses 18th-century paintings from the Cuzco School.

Iglesia San Francisco de Paula

Built in 1691, this church is famous for its rare collection of 'Ángeles Arcabuceros'—colonial paintings depicting angels armed with muskets, created by the Cuzco School.

Capilla de Nuestra Sra. de Rosario

One of Argentina's oldest churches, founded in 1598. It features a thatched roof, adobe construction, and an interior decorated with floral motifs and leather-bound cactus wood beams.

Iglesia de San José

A 17th-century colonial church located in Huacalera. It is known for its simple white facade and historic paintings reflecting the religious syncretism of the region.

Parroquía Nuestra Sra. de La Merced

A parish church serving the remote mountainous region of Valle Grande, representing the traditional religious architecture of the Jujuy highlands.

Iglesia de Cusi Cusi

A traditional Puna-style church featuring a separate bell tower and whitewashed adobe walls, characteristic of the remote villages in the high-altitude desert.
