Hidden Mines and Bothies

Explore the industrial legacy and rugged shelters of the Lake District fells. This collection features historic lead and slate mines, including the graphite deposits of Seathwaite and the extensive workings at Greenside. Complementing these industrial sites are remote mountain bothies like Warnscale Head and Dubs Hut, often repurposed from former mining structures to provide basic, high-altitude shelter for hikers in the wilderness.

The last working slate mine in England, producing Westmorland Green Slate. The site features underground tours and a Via Ferrata climbing route along the face of Fleetwith Pike.

Yew Craggs Slate Mine

The Honister Slate Mine in Cumbria is the last working slate mine in England.

Warnscale Head

A small stone mountain shelter overlooking Buttermere and Crummock Water. Originally built for miners, this remote bothy provides basic refuge in a high-altitude setting.

Dubs Hut

A former slate mine building repurposed as a mountain shelter. Located on the high pass between Honister and Buttermere, it is maintained by the Mountain Bothies Association.

Great Lingy Hut

A small wooden shelter located in the Northern Fells along the Cumbria Way. It provides basic refuge for hikers navigating the remote landscape near Mungrisdale Common.
