Churches of Monterosso

Monterosso al Mare’s religious heritage spans from the 13th-century Gothic-Ligurian architecture of San Giovanni Battista to the 17th-century Capuchin monastery. This collection includes the Oratorio dei Neri, known for its Baroque mourning symbols, and the ancient Santuario di Nostra Signora di Soviore, the oldest sanctuary in Liguria. Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista

13th-century Gothic-Ligurian church featuring a distinctive white and green striped marble facade and an intricate rose window. It serves as the main parish church in the historic center.

Chiesa di San Francesco

Part of a 17th-century Capuchin monastery overlooking the sea. The interior houses a Crucifixion painting attributed to Anthony van Dyck and ornate wooden Baroque altars.

Oratorio dei Neri

16th-century Baroque oratory used by the Confraternity of Death and Prayer. The interior is decorated with skulls and macabre symbols typical of the Counter-Reformation period.

Santuario di Nostra Signora di Soviore

The oldest sanctuary in Liguria, dating back to at least 1225. Located 400 meters above sea level, the complex features Romanesque and Gothic architectural elements.
