Nizhny Novgorod’s religious skyline is defined by its position at the confluence of the Volga and Oka rivers. This collection features the 17th-century Stroganov Baroque of the Nativity Church, the monumental 19th-century Alexander Nevsky Cathedral at the Spit, and the Kremlin’s Michael the Archangel Cathedral, the city's oldest surviving stone building. From the ancient Pechersky Ascension Monastery to the neoclassical Old Fair Cathedral designed by Auguste de Montferrand, these sites represent centuries of Orthodox tradition and diverse architectural styles.

Sobor Aleksandra Nevskogo

This 19th-century cathedral stands at the confluence of the Volga and Oka rivers. Built between 1868 and 1881, it features an 87-meter high central dome and was designed in an eclectic style to serve the merchants of the Nizhny Novgorod Fair.

Church of St. John the Baptist

The Church of St. John the Baptist is one of the oldest Orthodox churches in Nizhny Novgorod, mentioned from the 15th century.

Rozdestvenskaa cerkov

Built between 1696 and 1719, this church is a premier example of Stroganov Baroque. It is distinguished by its five colorful, intricately patterned domes and detailed white-stone carvings across the red brick facade.

Cerkov vo ima Svatogo Proroka Bozia Ilii

Established in 1655, this church commemorates the city's defense against invaders in 1505. The building features eclectic architectural elements and stands on the site of a much older wooden church in the historic Zapochayanye district.

A small stone chapel built in the late 19th century to commemorate the survival of the Russian Imperial family during a train crash in 1888. It features traditional Russian architectural motifs.

Completed in 1891, this is the city's primary Roman Catholic place of worship. It was originally built to serve the local Polish community and features a mix of Gothic and Romanesque architectural elements.

The oldest surviving building in the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin, completed in 1631. It is a notable example of tent-roofed architecture and serves as the burial place of the national hero Kuzma Minin.

Founded in 1221, this is the oldest monastery in Nizhny Novgorod. The current complex dates primarily to the 17th and 18th centuries, situated on the high bank of the Oka River.

Designed by architect Auguste de Montferrand and completed in 1822, this neoclassical cathedral was the spiritual center of the Nizhny Novgorod Fair. Its architecture influenced the later design of St. Isaac’s Cathedral.
