Central Greece Essentials

Central Greece encompasses the archaeological remains of Delphi, once considered the center of the ancient world, and the 11th-century Hosios Loukas monastery, a masterpiece of Middle Byzantine architecture. The region preserves the historical pass of Thermopylae, site of the 480 BC Spartan defense, alongside the extensive Mycenaean collections at the Thebes Museum. From the cliff-hanging Proussos Monastery in the Pindus mountains to the Aegean coastline at Hiliadou beach, this selection highlights the mainland’s most significant historical and natural landmarks.

Hosios Loukas is a historic walled monastery situated near the town of Distomo, in Boeotia, Greece.

Archaeological Museum of Thebes

Features artifacts ranging from the Neolithic era to the Ottoman period. Notable exhibits include Mycenaean ivory carvings, unique painted terracotta sarcophagi, and Mesopotamian cylinder seals discovered within the ancient citadel of Cadmea.

Proussos Monastery

A 9th-century monastic complex built into a limestone cliff in the Evrytania region. It houses a revered silver-plated icon of the Virgin Mary and a museum displaying historical manuscripts, ecclesiastical vestments, and Ottoman-era weapons.
