Natural Wetlands

Gotland’s landscape is defined by its "myrar" (fens) and "träsk" (shallow lakes), many of which are protected nature reserves. This selection includes Paviken, a former Viking Age harbor turned bird sanctuary, and the unique flooded limestone quarry at Bläse. These sites support rare orchids and provide critical resting grounds for migratory birds. From the peat bogs of Fårö in the north to the southern marshes of Sundre, these wetlands showcase the island's diverse aquatic ecosystems and limestone-influenced flora.

Stora Marumyr

Peat bog and nature reserve on Fårö island. Features rare plant species including the insectivorous sundew and various orchids.

Lilla Marumyr

Small wetland area on Fårö, located adjacent to Stora Marumyr within a protected nature reserve.

Paviken

Shallow bird lake and nature reserve near Västergarn. Historically a Viking Age harbor, it now serves as a significant stopover for migratory species.

Bläse kalkbrott

Flooded former limestone quarry near the Bläse Lime Industry Museum. Known for its clear, turquoise water and industrial heritage.

Line Träsk

One of Gotland’s largest inland lakes and marsh systems, providing habitat for numerous waterfowl and aquatic plants.

New Anga pond

Constructed wetland in Anga designed to improve local biodiversity and reduce nutrient runoff into the Baltic Sea.

Asträsk

Part of the Lojsta Hajdar lake system. A deep, clear lake surrounded by forest, historically used for fishing.

Botvaldeträsk

Shallow wetland and lake in Gothem, characterized by its reed beds and rich birdlife.

Sinkmyr

Wetland and fen area located in Vallstena, typical of the island's limestone-based bog ecosystems.

Lillmyr

Nature reserve on the southernmost tip of Gotland in Sundre. A diverse wetland area known for its rich flora and variety of bird species.
