Tablelands Essentials

The Atherton Tablelands, a fertile plateau in Far North Queensland, features a diverse landscape of volcanic maars, ancient rainforests, and historic mining towns. This collection highlights geological wonders like the Mount Hypipamee Crater and Lake Eacham, alongside botanical landmarks such as the 500-year-old Curtain Fig Tree. Cultural heritage is preserved at the Herberton Historic Village and the 1903 Hou Wang Temple, while the region’s agricultural roots are showcased at Mungalli Creek Dairy. The area is also defined by the Waterfall Circuit, anchored by the heritage-listed Millaa Millaa Falls.

Millaa Millaa Falls

Heritage-listed plunge waterfall located on the Waterfall Circuit. The site features a large swimming hole surrounded by lush rainforest and tree ferns.

Curtain Fig Tree

A massive strangler fig estimated to be over 500 years old. Its aerial roots drop 15 meters to the forest floor, creating a curtain-like appearance.

Cathedral Fig

A giant strangler fig located in Danbulla National Park. This 50-meter-tall tree features a massive canopy and complex buttress root system accessible via a boardwalk.

The Crater

A deep volcanic pipe, or diatreme, with granite walls dropping 58 meters to a lake covered in green weed. It is the only such formation in the region.

A clear blue volcanic maar lake within Crater Lakes National Park. The site includes a 3-kilometer rainforest walking track and designated swimming areas.
